St. John's cemetery dates back to the very beginning of our parish and serves as a historical record of the Village of Johnsburg. It is a beautiful setting of repose with several noteworthy features.
The inscription at the entry reads: “It is the resting place until the day of Resurrection for the bodies of the faithful departed, once temples of the Holy Spirit, whose souls are now with God. It is a final and continuing profession of faith in God and of membership in the Church by those who have chosen to be buried with fellow believers of “The Household of Faith".
Near the entry is The Crucifixion. This dramatic depiction of Jesus’ last moments on Calvary was sculptured in Italy and assembled in 1932 by descendants of one of the three found-ing families of St. John’s from 1841. It has been lovingly restored in 1990 and again in 2010 by giving families.
Near The Crucifixion stands the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. This impressive monument to Our Lady is an exact reproduction of the orig-inal grotto in Lourdes, France. It is constructed from petrified stone shipped here from Erie County, Ohio and was dedicated in 1921.
Further on in the cemetery is the Via Dolorosa (“Road of Sorrows”) area consisting of a wide circle arrangement in stone of the Stations of the Cross and a Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Chapel is fronted by a stone bridge and sits on a peaceful pond to its rear.
At the far end of the cemetery stands the Resurrection Garden. It contains a most striking life size figure of Our Lord all in white greeting the visitor anywhere in the cemetery. The statue was crafted in Italy and the area dedicated anew in 2008.
